The movie “Joker” by Todd Phillips leads the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) with 11 nominations for various categories.
“Joker,” the much-admired film about the back story of the comic book villain has now received 11 nominations this Tuesday for the EE British Academy Film Awards which is considered as Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars.
One of those was the best film category of the awards which is commonly known as the Baftas. In this category the movie will compete against Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Sam Mendes’s “1917,” which is World War I grand that won best drama at the Golden Globe Awards on this Sunday.
The directors of all the above-said movies will also compete for the best director prize.
“Joker” received rave reviews when it was released in Britain as in the United States. However, it was also criticised for its portrayal of mental illness and violence. There was another fold that centered on the movie’s soundtrack, which included a song by Gary Glitter, a British singer who is a convicted child abuser.

Joaquin Phoenix, who played the lead role in “Joker,” has been nominated for the best actor award in bafta. He has also backed the award at the Golden Globes on Sunday and is definitely of favorite to take the same at the Oscars.
While Baftas is, on one hand, Joker succeeded with only two of its four nominations into awards at the Golden Globes, where 1917, Sam Mendes’ First World War grand grabbed surprise wins in the coveted best director and best film categories.
The Bafta film awards will take place on 2 February at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
