Google’s Phone app will soon begin offering you a native call recording functionality. Google has been working in that direction and may come up with an update quite soon. The feature may be available with the future Android version, though we would not be able to confirm that it will be available with Android 11.
This was revealed through an APK teardown of the latest version of the Google Phone app. The feature is not available per se on the Google Phone app as of now. But, you may find the functionality soon in the future versions. There were hints available on the Google Phone version 43.0.289191107 that suggested that Google is working on it.
Google’s Phone app comes preinstalled with its Pixel phones and the phones marketed under its Android One program. A few other third-party phone makers have been using the installing Google Phone app out of the box. Xiaomi, for instance, does it for its phones sold in the European market.
The news was first broken by XDA Developers who found the files related to call recording on the latest version of the Phone app. An in-call button is likely to be added to the app. This will let the users tap the button and begin the audio recording from within the call.
The feature is not necessarily designed to work with Google’s Pixel devices or the phones under the Android One program. The feature may be designed for use with Xiaomi smartphones.
It may be noticed that the call recording feature which was available only till recently has now been withdrawn by Google. While most of the phone manufacturers enable the call recording through their own dialler apps, you would need to root your phone if you are on Pixel or other Android One devices. If the feature is made available through the official route, that would be a huge advantage.
