During the Computex 2019 keynote, AMD’s all-new Navi GPU made its first official appearance by AMD CEO Lisa Su.
Her keynote was focused on AMD’s new products along with AMD’s 50th-anniversary celebration which will be coming this year and their new partnership with Taiwanese technology.
AMD’s new graphics cards are built on the new Navi architecture. They will be included in the Radeon RX5000 series. In comparison with last generation Vega architecture, there are plenty of improvements that have been made.
This new series will be based on a 7nm chip that has been powered by Radeon DNA (RDNA) which is a gaming engine. This engine has been modified for better graphics performance, productivity and efficiency. This was something that Dr. Lisa expressed during the keynote.
If one compares the Navi architecture to Vega, they will find that Navi performs at 1.25 times per clock and at 1.5 times higher performance per watt.
AMD Navi 5000 series graphic cards are expected to come with Gen 4 enabled PCIe for a huge bandwidth which will be compatible with CPUs and motherboards.
There was no clear specification given by Su during her keynote, but she did give a live performance using RX5700 series GPU against an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 in the popular game Strange Brigade. It was clear by this visual shown on stage that the new NAVI GPU had about a 10% advantage over the existing GeForce card. Having said that no specifications of either were presented during the keynote.
RDNA is the future for all things gaming. It will provide a solid foundation for gaming as it will deliver excellent performance, power and even memory efficiency in a tinier package compared to the existing Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.
The price of this still remains a mystery as it is set out to be launched in July. So far AMD has only given a teaser about the new NAVI architecture. More details will be announced by AMD during the event: Next Horizon from E3 2019 which can be streamed on June 10th at 3 pm PT.
