As Intel failed to defend its crown on the desktop, AMD officially opened up a second front in the war at CES 2020 on Monday, with a series of Ryzen 4000 laptop CPUs that seem to outperform Intel’s best and brightest.
“In 2020, we will be introducing the best laptop processor ever built,” said AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su.
The company also detailed no less than seven consumer Ryzen 4000 processors, based on its 7nm Zen 2 cores. The CPUs will come in both 15 watt “U-class” ultra-low power versions in thin and light laptops and “H-class” 45-watt gaming and content creation laptops.
After receiving a thrash from AMD, Intel’s Gregory Bryant gave a brief update on the current state of Project Athena: specifically that, as of CES 2020, 25 new laptops have passed the tests that are necessary to be included in the program.
Also, Project Athena’s 5G integration will happen through Intel’s partnership with Mediatek to get 5G-enabled laptops out in 2021. Bryant also updated that 5G-enabled chips will be heading to hardware partners in Q3 2020, so it looks like Intel is still on track to make that goal.

Merely at the end of the show, Intel gave a sneak peek into an actual new product. This is named as Tiger Lake, the next (11th?) generation of mobile Ultrabook-class processors that will be the first consumer-class processors that will feature Intel Xe graphics. These integrated Xe graphics will be twice as powerful as the Gen11 graphics incomparable Ice Lake processors according to Intel.
There was also a super brief on the first discrete Intel Xe graphics processor, code named “DG1”. All we have to do is that just keep waiting to watch how Intel will break into the graphics card world!
