A British woman, an aid worker, was shot dead by in northern Nigeria and also abducted three people. Faye Mooney was just 29 years old and was a communications specialist for Mercy Corps who was in Nigeria for about two years. She had been in a group of twelve tourists who travelled from Lagos.
The British high commission confirmed yesterday that she was killed at Kajuru Castle in the state of Kaduna. Chief executive Neal Keny-Guyer posted a statement on a social media platform and said that ‘Faye was a very dedicated as well as passionate communications and learning specialist. Her colleagues are also utterly heartbroken. She added Faye worked with Mercy Corps for about two years and devoted her total time to make a difference in Nigeria’.
Yakubu Sabo, the Kaduna state police spokesman, told reporters that Gunmen stormed the Kajuru Castle resort at about 11:40 pm on Friday. Then the Briton was gunned down from hill by kidnappers who tried an entry to the main gate of the castle but failed. He added that ‘they also captured five more locals but out of all of them escaped.’
The police spokesman also cleared out that a Nigerian man who was Kajuru partner as per locals was also killed in this attack. However, in Kaduna as well as in the wider northwest area, kidnapping for ransom is increasing day by day specifically on the road to the capital Abuja.
Mooney’s family members also told the media that she had a deep love for life as well as for people. She was on holiday with her boyfriend, Matthew. She was an inspiration to her family, students, friends as well as colleagues. Her bravery along with her belief in a better society took her too many places others feared to go.
