Food allergy alert service begins in Scotland

In a wake of reminding people about their food and drink allergies, a new text and email alert service has been initiated in Scotland.

The alert service, which is backed by Food Standards Scotland, will be sending out email and text messages about incorrect or missing food labelling related to allergens.

The people who sign up for the service get the option to configure any allergen of the fourteen major allergens that are listed upon the food packaging.

Scotland has witnessed 86 allergy alerts regarding drink and food products in the previous year.

Ron McNaughton, the head of food crime and incidents unit of Food Standards Scotland said that food allergies can impose a significant impact on the quality of a person’s life. This is the reason why a decision to ensure that people having food allergies get access to information which they require has been made in order to make proper informed choices, he added.

The agency is working along with food businesses, local authorities as well as Food Standards Agency in order to ensure that people residing in Scotland are aware about any food allergen information problems.

McNaughton has urged people in Scotland with any food allergy to sign up for the tailored new alert service.
