In a tragic turn of events, Cho Yang-ho, the chairman of one of biggest airlines of Asia, Korean Air, has died in the United States, informed the Korean airline on Monday. He was 70 years old.

In a statement, the airline said that Cho Yang-ho passed away in a Los Angeles hospital from a chronic lung disease, without providing further details.

The leadership of the tycoon was embroiled by many family scandals, which also includes the 2014 ‘nut rage’ incident.

Cho Yang-ho, who was voted out from the airline’s board about 2 weeks ago, in the month of March, was facing trial on alleged charges of breach of trust as well as embezzlement. However, he had denied the charges posed against him.

It is expected that Cho Yang-ho’s son and president of Korean Air, Cho Won-tae will succeed him as the airline’s chairman, says a report in Financial Times.

Notably, the Cho family remained in the headlines for many months for the ‘nut rage’ incident which involved Cho Yang-ho’s eldest daughter, Cho Hyun-ah. The incident harmed the image of the carrier severely and created international headlines. On the other hand, his younger daughter named Emily Cho last year also faced criticism from the public for throwing water on the face of a person amid a business meet.
