In fact, this has a connection with the compromised credentials of a Microsoft Support Agent. This is expected to provide access to the “information within your Microsoft email account between January 1 and March 28”, says the email notification. However, Microsoft confirmed that it is not possible to read or view the content of the attachments to the email.

There is no information available on how many users on its Outlook webmail service have been affected by this compromised credentials. While Microsoft has expressed regret over the security lapse on the part of the software giant, it has also recommended the users to reset their passwords to keep their accounts in safer regions. The compromised credentials have already been disabled, and this will prevent further issues or misuse of the credentials.

If you have found any hacking attempts with respect to your webmail service, you can get in touch with the Data Protection officer from Microsoft for further assistance. The information on how to contact the officer is available on the email sent to the respective users.

If you have been a regular with Microsoft webmail service, it would be a wiser decision to opt for resetting your password even if you have not received the email from Microsoft. Prevention is better than cure, as they say!
