Woman carrying medicinal marijuana illegally was confiscated by the customs officials just when she entered the United Kingdom with the medication meant for her 9-year-old daughter suffering from severe epilepsy.
The officials stopped Emma Appleby and her nine-year-old daughter named Teagan at the Southend Airport on Saturday just after the two flew from Netherlands’ capital, Amsterdam.
Appleby from Aylesham, Kent carried marijuana oil worth £4,000 which she bought from Netherlands as her request to secure medicinal marijuana prescription was refused in the United Kingdom. However, the Border Force seized the drug before releasing the family from the Southend Airport.
Though medical marijuana was made legal in the United Kingdom in November last year, most of the parents are still facing issues to get prescriptions for the medication mainly because of resistance prevailing within the medical community.
A devastated Appleby explained that her daughter suffered from seizures each single day and night and feared whether Teagan would wake up the following morning. After trying all other medications at home, she believed that medicinal marijuana was the last resort which would help save her daughter.
Notably, new guidelines meant for doctors to prescribe marijuana based products will be drawn and further clinical research is being encouraged, said the government.
