Consuming a glass of beer, wine or any other alcoholic drink a day might not prevent serious circulatory or cardiovascular disease and in fact increase heart stroke chances, claims a new study.
As per the new study, people who drank moderately, just 1 or 2 drinks a day, showed 10-15% increased risk of stroke than compared to tee-totallers.
This highly contrasts with previous studies which have discovered that moderate drinkers have reduced risk of disease such as dementia, cancer than compared to the non-drinkers.
The Chinese and UK researchers of the study used a pioneering technique that utilizes gene data in order to unfasten few confounding factors which have affected other huge health studies. Furthermore, they are confident that the finding of their study reveals the real picture.
The lead researcher of the study, Professor Richard Peto said in a briefing held in London that components present in grapes like polyphenols and tannins are often touted for offering protective effects in red wine. This fact is widely claimed as it suits people to claim it, Peto further added.
Alcohol does not just increase the blood pressure but can cause other health complications like irregular heartbeat, weight gain, liver damage and diabetes as well. Hence, Dr Kate Holmes from the Stroke Association has advised people to try and discover ways to reduce drinking.
